J01 : Personal tax
The CII's J01 exam is a popular choice for the Diploma in Financial Planning. It is a 2-hour short answer question paper consisting of 15 questions, with a nominal pass mark of 55%. The CII recommend 100 hours of study for this paper, although this can vary greatly from person to person.
The exam syllabus covers the basic structure of the tax system and self-assessment; taxes charged to individuals on income and capital gains, how this works with self-assessment and how tax liabilities are calculated; residence and domicile and how this affects an individual's liability to tax in the UK.
