CII AF1 Exam: Personal Tax and Trust Planning
The CII's AF1 exam forms part of the Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning. It is a 3-hour question paper taking a case study approach. It consists of 3 compulsory questions, with a nominal pass mark of 55%. The CII recommend 150 hours of study for this AF1 exam paper, although this can vary greatly from person to person.
The AF1 exam syllabus covers the basic structure of the tax system and self-assessment; taxes charged to individuals on income and capital gains, how this works with self-assessment and how tax liabilities are calculated; social security benefits and their effect on tax planning; national insurance; residence and domicile and how this affects an individual's liability to tax in the UK; legal principles; trusts including duties and powers of trustees; wills and intestacy; bankruptcy; trusts and taxation.
